NSF International Certifies First Product to NSF Protocol P423 (GenEon Trio+)
GenEon Trio+ is the first to certify to the protocol for electrochemically activated water cleaning and sanitizing devices for use in food service operations
April 04, 2016
ANN ARBOR, Mich. and SAN ANTONIO, Texas – NSF International, an independent organization that writes standards, and tests and certifies products for the food and water industries, has certified the first product to a new protocol that evaluates electrochemically-activated sanitizing devices used in food operations to determine whether they meet requirements for safety and effectiveness. GenEon Technologies' product GenEon Trio+ is the first product to be certified to NSF Protocol P423: Electrochemically Activated Water Cleaning and Sanitizing Devices in Commercial Food Operations.
An electrochemically activated water cleaning and sanitizing system mixes a catalyst with tap water to activate a solution that can be used to clean and sanitize surfaces in commercial food operations. The product can be used as a substitute for chemical sanitizers and can be created on-site, which eliminates the need to purchase, transport and store cleaning products.
NSF P423 sets requirements for the safety and effectiveness of these engineered electrochemically activated sanitizer devices and their ability to produce a cleaner or sanitizer that can be used on food contact surfaces. NSF P423 sets forth the following key elements:
- Material requirements: Ensures the electrochemically activated sanitizer device is made of substances suitable for use in food establishments and is designed to promote cleanability;
- Labeling and product information requirements: Ensures the operating instructions are clear and yield a suitable sanitizer and that product labels meet labeling requirements for pesticides;
- Testing criteria: Demonstrates that concentrations of active ingredients in the electrochemically activated sanitizer achieve the active ingredient requirements and kill microorganisms at rates established by the U.S. EPA and/or the U.S. FDA's Food Code.
The GenEon Trio+ is a portable, electrochemical on-site generator that can transform potable tap-water with natural minerals into sanitizers, cleaners and degreasers without the toxic ingredients of traditional chemicals while reducing cost and carbon footprint.
"With more than 70 years of experience in the food safety industry, NSF International brings credible, third-party recognition to the GenEon Trio+ through certification to P423," said Sarah Krol, Global Managing Director of the Food Safety Product Certification program at NSF International. "Customers of GenEon Technologies and regulators can be assured that this product has been tested by NSF International to a rigorous set of quality, performance and material safety requirements."
"At GenEon we make products that solve problems for our customers. While we know they work, we wanted an independent organization with a worldwide reputation for integrity and thoroughness to evaluate the claims we've made. That is why we chose NSF International," said Syd Williams, Vice President of Client Services at GenEon Technologies. "We know that when our customers, channel partners, regulators and other constituents see the NSF mark on our Trio+ product they will be assured that we've truly delivered on the promises we've made."

About NSF International:
NSF International is an independent global organization that writes standards, tests and certifies products for the food, water and consumer goods industries to minimize adverse health effects and protect the environment (nsf.org)
. Founded in 1944, NSF is committed to protecting human health and safety worldwide. NSF is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Food and Water Safety and Indoor Environment.
NSF International developed the first standards for foodservice equipment in 1944, beginning with sanitization standards for soda fountain and luncheonette equipment. Since then, NSF has developed more than 90 American National Standards for a wide range of consumer and commercial products. Today, commercial food equipment certified to NSF national standards is mandated in state, county and city food codes throughout the U.S.
GenEon designs and manufactures On-Site Generating technologies that provide a broad range of uses which improve the health, safety and productivity of our customers. Our mission is to redefine the meaning of safer cleaning, degreasing and sanitizing/disinfecting to include sustainable, renewable and chemical-free options that are proven to be as effective as leading "green" and traditional chemical cleaners while also improving the health, safety and productivity of those who use or are exposed to those products where they live, work and play. Our vision is to develop products, services and solutions that help our customers and business partners transition to a world where sustainable and toxic-free cleaning is the new norm for safe, superior and cost-effective results.
